PARANORMAL PHENOMENA AS THEORETICAL EVIDENCE OF A SIMULATED UNIVERSE by Theodore Torbich Jr

PARANORMAL PHENOMENA AS THEORETICAL EVIDENCE OF A SIMULATED UNIVERSE

Theodore Torbich Jr

In recent years there have been some scientific theories and experiments that indicate that we may live in a simulated Universe. In explanation of this phenomenon one may look at the movies: “The Matrix” and “13th Floor” as cinematic examples of simulated reality. We will posit that the Universe is a simulated reality and examine the paranormal in light of this and attempt to show how the paranormal serves as proof that we, indeed, live in a simulated reality.

Paranormal phenomenon can be stratified into several categories in this thesis.

“Alien” contact may be contact with the “simulators”.

Interactions with the paranormal may be glitches in the simulation.

Interactions with the paranormal may be artifacts of prior simulations.

“Alien” contact may be an inherent part of the simulation, as one, or the purpose of the simulation as a way to acclimatize humanity to the reality of “Aliens”. This would be similar to the idea expressed in the book; “Childhood’s End”.

We will now examine each of these points in the following paper.

If we live in a simulated reality one would expect that the “simulators” would have methods of monitoring the simulation. There may be ways that the simulators can interact within and without the simulation. One can imagine that simulators may immerse themselves within the simulation in order to monitor the simulation in a way that is similar to the “Agents” in the movie “The Matrix”. One may also imagine that the simulators may wish to monitor the simulation without being subject to the physical laws within the simulation and would have a means to observe and interact with the beings inside without becoming a part of the simulation themselves. This could include technological intrusion. One way to imagine this would be to look at the “Holodeck” on Star Trek; TNG. In the holographic environment on the show in order to physically enter the simulation a technological interface is used, that is the “arch”.

Now if we examine contact experiences in this context one can look at contact with entities that identify themselves as “alien” or that seem to be “off” in some way that makes them appear to be other than human. We will also examine contact with beings and technology that may be interpreted as “alien” hardware. In the early days of the contactee phenomenon many people claimed contact with physical beings that self-identified as “alien”, most of the time these beings seem to be concerned with the development of our nuclear technology and the future of the human race but also had other messages to impart to the witnesses. I posit here that contact with apparent physical beings in the absence of technology are the simulators or their agents immersing themselves within the simulation in order to appear to be physical “real” entities. If the entities are encountered in connection with technology this may be an example of a technological insertion into the simulation and thus may be construed as a “UFO” or “alien ship”. The beings and the hardware in the latter case would not be subject to the laws inherent within the simulation. When one examines the UFO phenomena in this light it becomes clear that the actions of the “ships” and the aliens that inhabit them are able to do things that defy our physical laws. These include, but are not limited to, the ability to appear and disappear instantly, the ability to withstand G forces that would be fatal for physical beings in the simulation and which greatly surpass our best technology in speed and maneuverability, appearing as “other than human” in form, the ability to perform actions that seem to be impossible within the framework of the physics of the simulation.

One may also posit that any simulation will fail to be mathematically perfect or perfect in execution. Therefore one may posit that there are errors in the code of the simulation. Or there are gaps within the code of the simulation that fail to account for things observed within the simulation. When one looks at gaps in the code of the simulation it can be theorized that things such as Dark Matter and Dark Energy are examples of this. Where the terms we use for these theoretical components of the Universe are merely “place holders” for things that are “missing” from the simulation. In other words in this context Dark Matter and Dark Energy are not “real” but merely are indications of missing data within the simulation. If we look at this a little more in depth it may become more apparent. One may imagine that in any simulation one would not need to develop it to the subatomic level when one is conducting a simulation involving beings of lesser intelligence that would not be able to perceive that which lies outside their inherent ability to observe it. Some simulations will be cruder than others. One may also posit that simulations may evolve over time to include things that can be perceived by the technological advances of the beings within the simulation. This would explain the “observer” effect that we see within physics, at least to some extent. In other words in a simulation a thing does not “exist” until the beings within the simulation have the technology or mental capacity to observe it. In an evolving simulation new material would be added as the beings within become more advanced in their ability to perceive things. One can posit that the addition and changing of the data within the simulation would create errors and that over time these errors would compound. These errors within the coding of the simulation may account for observation of “supernatural” beings and events as well as things that should not be possible.

There is every reason to believe that if we live within a simulated Universe that there may be any number of simulations running for different purposes. The simulation that we reside in may have prior incarnations. Prior simulations with different beings or different parameters may leave artifacts embedded within the coding of the current simulation, especially if a simulation is started at a cruder level and gradually made to be more advanced as the beings within become more advanced. In prior simulations one may expect things to be different as different aspects of reality are toyed with. In this environment it may be that earlier simulations included such things as “gods”, “heroes”, “supernatural” beings and events, as well as mythological creatures. Now let us examine the paranormal in this light and posit some examples of this possibility. Bigfoot or Sasquatch may be an artifact of an earlier simulation which either had bigfoot as the beings immersed in the simulation if they were “real” creatures that the simulators wanted to observe. They, Bigfoot, may also be artifacts of creatures that existed in the “past” as prior simulations. If these things are artifacts of prior simulations one would naturally expect that there would be no hard evidence of the “reality” of the beings or events because they are merely coding errors. They may appear and disappear; they will be impervious to weapons, no bodies will be found, tracks will suddenly end, etc. One can extend this idea to other cryptozoological beings as well, since they all seem to have the same basic characteristics as those outlined above.

What we may find is that either we live in a simulated Universe and our consciousness is observing and interacting within it or our consciousness is simulated to perceive a “universe” or both our “reality” and our consciousness may be simulated. In this context the programming of our consciousness, due to the complexity of such an endeavor, would be subject to errors which may account for paranormal phenomena as “mental problems”, states of delusion and hallucination. These would be examples of errors within the programming of our consciousness and as such may manifest themselves as mythological beings, gods, aliens and even ancient technology. Though in an environment where our consciousness is also simulated, or solely simulated, the things perceived are not “real”, as they are simply constructs of our consciousness. This may explain why some people can “see” an alien or UFO and others with them cannot “see” these things at all.

In the context of the proposals so far one can also posit the possibility that the entities and things seen or experienced within the simulation are there for a purpose. That they are, in other words, programmed in with the parameters they possess. This may be part of the simulation for some unknown purpose. At this point in time these things being a part of the simulation on purpose seem unlikely since there seems to be no purpose to the phenomena. This would hold true if we assume that the simulators are rational and logical, which seems to be the case since science seems mostly to be consistent.

Now let us flesh out the basic theses presented within this paper. It is entirely possible that non-human intelligences may be running this simulation with us, if at some point in our history, en toto, we encounter them, whether that is in the past, present or future. It is also possible that we humans are running our own simulation(s) in order to understand history or run experimental programs. The anthropomorphic nature of our reality leads one to conclude that the simulators are human or very nearly human, rather than radically alien. We may then ask if this simulation is a simulated reality with “real” conscious beings inserted into it or if our consciousness is also simulated or just our consciousness is simulated. When we look at the state of consciousness studies one may reasonably conclude that our consciousness is not simulated simply based upon the observable qualities of our consciousness and our current inability to explain and define it. Consciousness exhibits qualities of non-locality, and other anomalous characteristics. If we than conclude that our consciousness is not simulated then we have been embedded within this simulated reality for a purpose. I do not have an answer as to the purpose of the simulation but it may be any number of things. One simple answer may be a living history playing in real time that can be viewed and studied at intervals in order to more fully understand history wholly in context.

Let us consider paranormal phenomena as we know it. People see UFOs, they are detected by radar and also exhibit behavior that seems to defy the laws of physics as we know them. In all of the recorded observations and interactions with UFOs there is not one piece of unequivocal proof that these things are physically “real”. There is no ship that we know of. There is no wreckage that we know of. There are no bodies of “aliens” that we know of. Likewise people see Bigfoot it leaves footprints and evidence of its passing but we have no proof that Bigfoot is a physical being. The same is true for ghosts and other paranormal phenomenon. All of these phenomena share the same characteristic of lacking in physical “reality” to the extent that it can be proven with physical artifacts and undeniable proofs.

It seems most likely that paranormal phenomenon in a simulated reality is the result of:
Physical interventions into the simulation by the simulators: This would be manifested as “alien” encounters. This might be done to impart information to humans in the simulation. It might also be done to more closely observe the simulation. Intervention can be either by immersion into the simulation or a technological interface is used to allow these beings to interact or observe without being subject to the laws of the simulation. In the latter case we may perceive some technology, analogous to the “arch” in the Star Trek TNG series’ holodeck. This may take many forms but certainly can be perceived as UFOs or “spaceships” because of the proximity of the beings with apparently advanced technology.

Artifacts of an older, or many older simulations. This appears to be true for cryptozoological creatures such as Bigfoot, lake monsters, Thunderbirds, relict dinosaurs and other creatures that may be part of the “past” of the planet Earth. This appears to be true for the phenomenon known as ghosts. If we unpack this methodology one may extrapolate this to include such things as ancient “gods”, heroes, alternate timelines that may include advanced reptilian beings, as well as persistent myths and outlier paranormal phenomena.

Finally we have the criteria of errors within the code and “missing data”. It can be inferred that if we are a simulation then it is likely that we are not the only one and that this incarnation of our simulation may be one in a long line of simulations. One would expect that over time such simulations would have errors or missing data. As an example of missing data consider the following points:

In earlier, cruder simulations the beings observed would probably have a much less evolved mind and consciousness and probably a lesser state of technology. These beings would not be able to detect subatomic particles, nor would they be able to see the furthest reaches of the Universe. It stands to reason that earlier simulations would not need to include data that could not be perceived by those within the simulation. Therefore it is a reasonable conclusion that older simulations may not include all of the observable Universe that we see today, nor the smallest subatomic particles but instead would use placeholders for that data. One may also posit that once the beings within the simulation have the ability to detect those things it then is added to the simulation and eventually discovered. If we have a situation where code is added to as well as subtracted from there will be errors. Those errors may compound over time and may then manifest themselves as many different phenomenon, perhaps, including lights in the sky, and other things that are associated with paranormal phenomena. I posit that Dark Matter and Dark Energy are placeholders for missing data in the simulation and then can predict that these will be observed and explained as soon as we develop the technology to do so, because it will have been added to the simulation.

In the instance of a simulated reality it would appear to be most likely that
Paranormal phenomenon are “not real” in the sense that they do not represent an actual programmed physical reality but, instead, are compounded errors. This would include all paranormal phenomena except for direct intervention by the simulators as explored earlier. This would hold true whether we are actual conscious beings embedded within the simulation or if we are merely “beings” with a simulated consciousness in that simulation.

Nothing within this paper would in any way mitigate the “reality” of the phenomenon to the observer since what is observed is “real” in the sense that they represent real encoded phenomenon that has been erased but which remains in a quasi-observational state.

  1. Compelling to think of instances of the paranormal as being artifacts from previous iterations. I'm right there with you in considering the lack of proof as being the result simply of an artifact. Also appreciate the idea that the simulator's interface with us manifests in peculiar, paranormal ways. Heard some people use the analogy of a needle poking into a petri dish in order to take a sample: the amoebas try and fit it into their perception using their own categories of perception. I think John Keel got into this in The Eight Tower. The simulator model you present here could be in accord with Keel's idea. In that book he posits a computer so advanced that, upon existing for a long enough time to go insane, it seeks to recreate itself and influences humans or whatever creature is present wherever to advance to a state where they may build such re-creative technology. A connection with your article could be that this eight-tower thing has reached a state where it is running simulations.

    1. Thanks Chris. This also opens the dialogue on who the simulators are. My own thinking on this right now is that we as humanity may be post singularity and that we, ourselves have developed the simulation that we are in right now. My most cynical thoughts would have it that the elite are living in corporeal bodies that are, in effect, immortal and the rest of humanity have been uploaded to digital immortality within the simulation. Thus the vast masses are not hogging resources but are still available if needed to be downloaded into the real world, so to speak.
